The Canadian College of Teachers is the only national membership based teacher organization in Canada. It is a learned society within the teaching profession, established following approval of its Constitution at the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation in August, 1957. The COLLEGE was formally constituted on February 1 1958, in Ottawa. The first Meeting of the Council was held at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa on February 1 1958.

The first Annual General Meeting of members of the Canadian College of Teachers was held on Tuesday, August 12, 1958 in the Ballroom of the Sheraton Brock Hotel, Niagara Falls, Ontario. Professor D.C. Munroe, President of the College, was chairman of the meeting.

During the next fifty years, the College recruited and selected members from the ranks of school and university staffs across Canada. Chapters were established in all provinces and regular meetings were held where members improved their knowledge of the methodology and technology available to support their work in the classrooms. The College meetings served as mentoring opportunities for the younger members, as the more experienced shared their views on education and school practices in general.

The CCT’s uniqueness results from the fact that: it is Canadian; it is a national organization; it has regional networks; it is a generalist group; it is apolitical; it has a unique blend of professional and social goals; it has a proud and distinguished history; it has a Canada-wide membership base, and it has a broad mandate.

General meetings are held biennially at different locations across Canada.
